How to clean windows in a commercial building

Large glass windows or glass storefronts are a great way to showcase shop displays, flood light into the room and give the building a modern feel. However, the more glass you have means the more cleaning that’s needed. This can be off putting for business owners, and often the windows do not get the treatment they need. While dirty windows may not be the downfall of your business, first impressions count.

Although we recommend hiring a professional commercial cleaning company if your business is based in a multi-storey building (you will need specialist certificates and licences in order to be able to do this safely), there are quick fixes you can use to tide you over until you contract a professional cleaning services company. However, we only recommend this for glass that is on ground level - leave the more difficult places to reach to us!

Firstly, you need to make sure you have the right supplies. You will need window cleaner – a commercial product, preferably. Homemade solutions work well for the house, but you will get much more effective and swift results with a commercial product if you need to clean a large number of windows. Then you will need a squeegee, a sponge, a bucket, a scraper and a microfiber cloth.

To start, prepare your solution in the bucket to the directions on the product – generally, it will be two parts cleaning solution to one-part water. Then, you will want to apply the solution to the window with the sponge. If there is anything stuck to the glass that won’t come off with the solution, use the scraper to pry it off gently. The solution should do most of the work for you, as now all you need to do is dry the glass with the squeegee. Start from the top and work left to right and wipe the blade clean in between strokes. Afterwards, you can finish it off with a microfiber cloth to get any corners you missed with the squeegee.
